Citric Acid Cleaning Tips


Citric acid is a white crystalline powder wich is in some fruits like lemon. It is widely used in the food industry as an antioxidant and stabilizer, but because of their properties is also widely used in cleaning products to cut grease and remove some stains.

1. The International Molybdenum Association recommends products containing citric acid to remove stains and adhesives stainless steel.


2. It kills bacteria and cuts grease and stains. It can be used to clean floors, countertops and other areas of the home. It is environmentally safe, which is a good alternative to other caustic cleaners that can be harmful and toxic. You can disinfect and clean kitchen countertops and the table with a soaked cloth  in a diluted nine parts water to one part citric acid.

3. To maintain clean drains pour two liters of water with 20 g. citric acid dissolved periodically.
If the drain is clogged then pour two liters of water almost boiling with ¼ cup of salt dissolved, wait until all the water has passed through the obstruction and then pour ¼ cup of baking soda, then ½ cup of water with a teaspoon citric acid well dissolved. The combination of both will create an effervescent effect, leave on 30 minutes. After this time pouring a liter of near-boiling water with ½ cup of salt dissolved. If necessary repeat the steps to unclog completely. The advantage of this method is that it contains no corrosive chemicals which can damage the interior of the pipes.

 4. To disinfect and descale inside the washing machine should be done once a month without clothes washing drum and add two tablespoons of citric acid, select the highest temperature and the longest cycle.

5. To descale the coffee maker dissolve 50g. citric acid in one liter of water, fill with this mixture the water tank of the coffee maker and put to work, taking care to place the output in a container of a liter. Once the process repeated twice with  only water , to remove all the rests and to rinse inside the coffee maker.

6. To descale the iron with a solution of nine parts water and citric acid. Run the self-cleaning function, or if it doesn't have it active steam and iron over an old cloth until the water runs out. Then repeat the same operation but with only water.

7. If your dishwasher lets the plates and glasses with a white coating to cycle test with two tablespoons of citric acid in place of dishwashing detergent to get used. Be careful not to get any metal utensil. At the end of the cycle the dishes and glasses have been brilliant.

8. To remove limescale on taps and shower door spray it with a solution of one liter of warm water in which you have dissolved two tablespoons of citric acid. It will be clean and bright and you get rid of limescale. If the taps are very stubborn marks can soak a paper towel in the solution and put it on top of the taps to act.

9. If your windows are very dirty will be fine if you clean them with a mixture of two liters of water and two tablespoons of citric acid. It will help remove dirt and water marks and greasy layer that sometimes forms by pollution.

10. To remove rust spots made a mix with two tablespoons of borax, two tablespoons of water and half a teaspoon of citric acid. Soak a cloth in the mixture and rub the stain until it disappears.

11. To remove deodorant stains on some cloth  put it in a liter of hot water and 30 g. citric acid. Let it stand and as softening the stain will rub a little. Once the water has cooled take it and review, if  the stain did´nt disappear  repeat the process until no traces of deodorant. Then wash it normally.
